- Tongue thrust
My goal as a Myofunctional Therapist is understanding and emphasizing the importance of:
Tongue Tie / Speech Problem
A tongue tie is a piece of tissue attached under the tongue. When the tongue is lifted, the tongue tie can easily be seen. Every person has a frenum connected to the bottom of their tongue. In certain people, the frenum is tighter than should be, which makes it very difficult to utilize the tongue to its full capacity, hence causing improper function of the tongue and other orofacial muscles.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea is when the muscles in the back of the throat relax during sleep. When the muscles relax, the airway narrows down and eventually closes during breathing This disables the body from getting enough air, which causes the oxygen level in the blood to significantly decrease.
Mouth breathing begins when a person is unable to breathe sufficiently through their nose and in response, the mouth starts breathing in the air needed for the body.
Tongue thrust is when a person’s tongue pushes (thrusts) up against the teeth or between the front teeth while at rest, speaking, or while swallowing. The constant pressure or thrust from the tongue forces the teeth and arch out of alignment and creates a gap, or open bite between top and bottom teeth. Untreated tongue thrust can lead to long-term damage to speech, like a lisp over certain sounds.
